Pilates

Pilates is not just a series of exercises, it is a conceptual approach to movement. It will change not only the way you look, but how you feel and think. The technique can be taught in different ways – for strength or relaxation.
Michael King, Pure Pilates

I was introduced to Pilates when I attended a class to help improve poor posture from my own work. I suffered from lower back pain on a regular basis. After just one class I was more aware of my posture and abdominals so I decided to train in the fundamentals of Pilates. Since I incorporated daily Pilates practice into my life, my body awareness has increased and my posture has improved. I’m experiencing less stress, my strength has increased and most importantly, I no longer suffer from lower back pain.

Pilates is a series of exercises that has been described as “a thinking way of moving”. It is a full body workout that works the core muscles in the body – it focuses on increasing core strength in the abdominals and lengthening and stretching all muscles, giving the appearance of a longer, leaner body.

The core muscles tend to get ignored when we work out in the gym or jog or generally carry out our daily duties. And yet our core muscles are our foundation muscles and are necessary for all movement. By strengthening our core, we build a stronger foundation to support our back and prevent injury.

You can incorporate Pilates exercises into your everyday life by simply learning and practicing the basic principles and correcting poor posture. The more you commit to do Pilates exercises, the better the results for yourself, your body, your physical fitness and your wellbeing. -. It is just as important to master the fundamentals of Pilates as it is to perform the movements. Through the self awareness that Pilates brings, you can identify and change bad postural habits.

With the Pilates certification required to teach Pilates workouts, I can attend to your individual needs and help you to perform the movements correctly. I teach one or two people at a time because I find it can be more beneficial to teach the basics to a small group and give individual attention.

Pilates can be an excellent complement to your current physical fitness programme. No Pilates equipment is required; a pilates workout is similar to yoga in the way it focuses on suppleness and it also adds to the strength building that you do in the gym.
